Early—much too early—on the morning of the party I woke up with my arm draped casually across Kaz. She was totally asleep, still sprawled across the mattress, just like the other day. I couldn’t help smiling, even in the near-complete darkness. She was unhandleably adorable that way. I loved everything about the way she slept. The way she smiled. The way she… was.

This was what I had always wanted from a relationship. What I didn’t know was possible. And slightly what I feared. The party was today, and If something bad happened now…

I took in a deep breath, trying to calm myself after that thought. It didn’t work very well, though. The more I thought of what could happen to my knight, the more panicked I got, although I tried hard not to move or make any noise.

That didn’t end up working. She opened her eyes, saw me there, and sat up on one arm.

“Hey? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I just… nothing.”

“Don’t lie to me. Something is wrong. Please tell me what it is?”

“I just thought about how much of a sticky situation we’re in. We’re luring in the man who killed my mother. Today. It’s happening today. And if he did anything to hurt you, I just… I couldn’t think about it without…”

Tears started coming, and I couldn’t stop them. Kaz looked completely sympathetic, though. She didn’t say anything about my worries being an overreaction, like I might have expected from anyone else. She just flipped over, leaned up against a pile of pillows, and held her arms out to me. I scrambled into them as fast as I could, while still trying to hold back the tears.

“Hey,” she whispered into my hair. “I love you. And I will do everything I can to make sure nothing bad happens.”

“I know. It’s just still scary.”

“Yeah.”

I rested my head against her shoulder. Nearly as soon as my skin touched hers, I felt better. Not perfect, but the worry sapped away like I’d never experienced before.

“You sure you’re not a demi-goddess?” I asked.

She gave a small chuckle. “Last I checked.”

“Well, you are definitely magic. So maybe you have an ancestor you don’t know about.”

“That must be it,” she said.

With that, she squeezed her arms around me just a little tighter, and I felt just that much better. This really was something I’d never experienced before. At least not that I remembered. Maybe with mom when I was little? But even then, it wasn’t the same. Kaz had something about her that I couldn’t stay away from, and couldn’t live without.

“Hey,” she said. “I want you to know that I won’t leave your side. Not for the entire time. Okay?”

“Thank you.”

She rested her head against mine, and my chest eased up. I could breathe a little freer. Slowly my muscles un-tensed, and my now-drier eyes fluttered shut.
